The September issue of Navy Today is out now, with our cover celebrating nearly 30 years in print.
This issue will be the last one to be printed as a hard copy, with all three service magazines published in a digital format online from October.
In this issue, we congratulate HMNZS Canterbury going all-hands full-on with a training push to get more sailors qualified. We introduce our new Chief of Navy, and catch up with HMNZS Aotearoa’s adventures in South East Asia. An engineer takes charge of HMNZS Te Mana and we meet our specialist Uncrewed Aerial Systems people, freshly returned from a mission with the Royal Navy. A Navy couple relate their experiences over a long-term deployment as a family where the temperatures can be minus 30 degrees.
Our Navy's presence at the world's largest maritime exercise in Hawaii kicks off our Navy Today coverage for August, with HMNZS Aotearoa and our divers from HMNZS Matataua representing for New Zealand. HMNZS Manawanui concludes Pacific adventures, and we meet the new Commanders of HMNZS Taupo and HMNZS Wakefield. We profile five of our talented sailors and their careers, meet one of New Zealand's oldest Navy veterans at 104 and get a first look at the new design for the Navy officer's sword.
In our July edition we showcase the regeneration of frigate HMNZS Te Kaha as it builds up for its 2025 overseas deployments. HMNZS Matataua works with NZ Customs to intercept a drugs shipment attached to a ship's hull, while HMNZS Manawanui helps clear explosive remnants of war from a harbour in Vanuatu. HMNZS Taupo works with MPI to inspect fishing vessels in the South Islands and a team from HMNZS Ngapona travel to Ireland to help them kick-start their Inshore Patrol Vessels (purchased from New Zealand).
